Aim for Perfection, but Achieve Excellence

Aim for Perfection, but Achieve Excellence

Following on the footsteps of the ‘Follow the Black Line’ philosophy of the National Paralympic Team, the catch phrase for the March 25th National Selection Camp, was ‘Aim for perfection, but achieve excellence’.
"In the game of football mental lapses more than physical ones are responsible for breakdowns in the game.  It was for this reason that the philosophy behind this National Camp, was to increase the desire in players to compete not only to win the game, but to win every single battle that they engaged in, in the course of play".

After physiological testing on Friday night, National players were involved in a lecture called ‘Achieving a Winning Mentality’.
This idea of achieving a winning mentality was repeated and developed throughout the weekend long camp, both in team meetings and coaching sessions. Paul Brown, National Coach, noted that “the team with this mentality and the team that won more individual battles in the course of a match would indeed be successful”.
The players were repeatedly involved in 1 versus 1, 2 versus 2 and 3 versus 3 to net  games.  Goalkeepers were also subjected to repeated shot stopping game intensity activity in these games.

“At times it is very easy for players to hide in a game. Small sided games are intense and solely reliant on the performance of a particular player. 1 versus 1 is the purest form of football and allows players to engage in those all-important individual battles” Brown said.

This mentality was then re-emphasised in a  full game situation. The passion and intensity that the players played with in the small sided games was then brought into a full squad game. “The important thing is that players think that they are going to win each battle even if they don’t” Brown said.
“My players played with plenty of passion, and intensity this weekend and they will need that as we prepare for the World Championships in the Netherlands in June”.
